No matter the circumstances, few things are as meaningful as the people who enrich our lives. Your fully gold-plated $8 pure silver coin is a heartfelt keepsake of friendship and appreciation. Clad in the colour of prosperity, the coin features a Chinese national treasure and a beloved international symbol of friendship, peace and harmony. Playful and sweet natured, the bamboo-loving pandas are seated side by side like two close friends—a beautiful representation of a special bond that is built on honesty, loyalty, trust and generosity.
In addition, your coin comes with three different Chinese calligraphy cards (peace, happiness, and strength) by Kit Au, a renowned Chinese calligrapher whose artwork includes the platform calligraphy for Hong Kong’s underground subway stations. This customizable feature allows you to attach personal meaning to the coin and express your appreciation for its recipient, whether it’s a friend whose bond has become stronger with the years, a parent who has inspired peace, or a child who has brought joy to one’s life.

Your coin is inspired by the giant panda’s (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) playful personality, peaceful demeanour and friendly characteristics. Like old friends, the two giant pandas sit beside one another, both facing the viewer while feeding on bamboo leaves and stalks. Above one panda’s head is the Chinese character for “friendship”, which, along with the engraved words “FRIENDSHIP” and “AMITIE”, transforms the wildlife-themed image into a cross-cultural celebration of friendship. The reverse also features the word “CANADA” and “2019”, along with a “P” mark that denotes the plated nature of the coin. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Kit Tong Abe Au is a professional architect who learned traditional Chinese calligraphy at an early age. His work includes the platform calligraphy for Hong Kong’s underground subway stations. After moving to Calgary in 2006, Mr. Au returned to architectural design and currently teaches Chinese calligraphy, art, and culture.
This keepsake of friendship is a ready-made gift as it comes enclosed in a colourful presentation card with envelope.
